VOLUNTEER CREW CHECKLIST

All volunteers are encouraged to dress in plain clothing such as khaki or light colored pants/shorts and a dark blue or navy shirt. Sailing Heritage Society t-shirts are available at a cost of $5.

Pre-departure

  • Crew should arrive 1 hour before sail
  • Unlock boat
  • Perform walk through and note any problems (ropes, sail cover, life lines, etc)
  • Remove bird mess from deck using bucket and brush
  • Turn on all cabin decorative lights
  • Raise flag if first trip of the day
  • Open salon port lights if appropriate weather
  • Close aft port lights if open
  • Stock heads with Toilet paper (cupboard above aft head), soap, towels
  • Complete pre-sail check off sheet including
  • Engine check
  • Generator Check
  • Flag Raising
  • Start generator if necessary and switch from shore power to generator, on panel
  • Disconnect the power and phone lines from dock and boat. Coil on to the, dock
  • Open exhaust valve and bring key up to pilothouse
  • Help to welcome guests aboard
  • Show guests below deck and give tour of the boat
  • Ask that guests place their bags/coats in forward cabin
  • Answer questions about boat and SHS as able
  • Have guests sign "Hold Harmless" waiver
  • Do a head count of guests, children and crew last thing before leaving, the dock and note in log
  • If no host Brigade, the Watch assumes all host duties
  • Be present for captain's safety talk

During Sail:

  • Cast off lines and assist leaving the dock
  • Pull up and secure the fenders on bow or pilot house roof
  • Set & Trim Sails
  • Speak with Guests about other things that the boat does
  • Pull up and secure fenders on pilothouse roof or bow
  • Flemish coil dock lines on deck
  • Secure gangway

After Sail:

  • Docking
  • Set fenders just above water line at stanchions marked with blue tape
  • Prepare lines to be ready for docking (bow line brought, clip line and aft spring)
  • Hook dock clip line as boat approaches the dock and connect to boat clip line
  • STEP off the boat when safely able
  • Make fast aft spring line near the orange mark and notify captain when done
  • Tie off bow line and forward spring
  • Secure stern line and cinch down so that boat is parallel with dock
  • Lower flag if last trip of the day
  • Clean up garbage & bags take to dumpster if full
  • Put dishes in galley
  • Bring the power and phone lines back aboard and reconnect at dock and aboard
  • Switch power back to shore power and turn off generator
  • Sweep Pilot House Floor
  • Vacuum Steps and Salon Floor
  • Turn off cabin light
  • Complete Deck log sheet be sure captain signs it
  • Make note on Deck log of anything that is needed
  • File Log sheet in file drawer
  • Secure donation box in aft cabin before locking cabin up
